Stamped Concrete vs Pavers vs Plain Concrete

An honest comparison for Eastern Idaho homeowners. Which lasts, which looks best, and which makes sense for our climate.

If you are choosing a surface for a patio, driveway, or walkway in Eastern Idaho, you have three main options: plain (standard) concrete, stamped concrete, and pavers. Each has tradeoffs — and the Eastern Idaho climate changes the math compared to warmer regions.

Plain Concrete (Broom Finish)

Plain concrete with a broom finish is the most affordable and straightforward option. It is durable, low-maintenance, and provides good traction in all weather. It looks clean but is not decorative.

Stamped Concrete

Stamped concrete gives you the look of natural stone, brick, or slate pressed into a poured slab. The surface is colored and sealed. It costs more than plain concrete because of the additional labor, tooling, and materials.

  • Decorative appearance — stone, brick, slate, wood patterns
  • Monolithic slab — no shifting, settling, or joint weeds
  • Moderate additional cost over plain concrete
  • Requires resealing every 2–3 years to maintain appearance
  • Can be slippery when wet unless textured or anti-slip additive used

Pavers

Pavers are individual units — brick, stone, or manufactured — set on a sand and gravel base. They offer a wide range of patterns and colors but have specific challenges in Eastern Idaho's climate.

  • Wide variety of colors, shapes, and patterns
  • Individual units can be replaced if damaged
  • Higher upfront cost than concrete
  • Sand base allows shifting and settling in freeze-thaw cycles
  • Joints collect dirt, weeds, and ice
  • May require annual releveling in frost-prone areas
  • Note: Mountain West does not install pavers

The Eastern Idaho Factor

In warmer climates, pavers perform well because the ground does not heave. In Eastern Idaho, frost heave pushes individual pavers out of alignment, creating trip hazards and requiring regular maintenance. The sand base also holds moisture that freezes and accelerates this movement.

Stamped and plain concrete — poured as monolithic slabs on compacted gravel — resist this movement because the entire surface rises and settles as one unit, not as hundreds of individual pieces.

This is why we pour concrete and do not install pavers. For Eastern Idaho conditions, a properly prepared concrete slab — plain, colored, or stamped — provides better long-term performance.
