Colored concrete adds warmth and personality to driveways, patios, and walkways. The question every homeowner asks is: will the color last? The honest answer is that it depends on the coloring method, the sealer used, and whether you maintain it.
Here is what you need to know.
Integral Color vs Surface Color
Integral color is mixed into the concrete before it is poured. The pigment goes all the way through the slab — from top to bottom. If the surface wears, the color underneath is the same. This is the most durable coloring method.
Surface-applied color (also called color hardener or stain) is applied to the top of the concrete after pouring. It sits on or near the surface. Surface color can be more vibrant initially but is more susceptible to wear and UV fading over time.
We use integral color as our primary method and surface color as an accent — especially on stamped work where a different shade in the stamp recesses creates depth and texture.
What Causes Color to Fade
Three things fade concrete color:
- UV exposure — Direct sunlight breaks down the sealer and gradually lightens surface color. East-facing and south-facing surfaces get the most exposure.
- Moisture and freeze-thaw — Water entering unsealed or poorly sealed concrete carries surface color away over time. Freeze-thaw cycles accelerate this process.
- Abrasion — Traffic, snow shoveling, and general use wear the surface. On integral color, this is less noticeable because the color runs through. On surface color, wear exposes the gray concrete underneath.
The Role of Sealer
Sealer is the single most important factor in color longevity. A quality sealer protects the surface from UV damage, moisture penetration, and abrasion. Without sealer — or with sealer that has worn off — colored concrete will fade faster.
We apply sealer at the appropriate curing stage and provide a maintenance schedule based on your specific conditions. Most colored concrete in Eastern Idaho benefits from resealing every 2–3 years, depending on exposure and traffic.
Realistic Expectations
Integral colored concrete that is properly sealed and maintained will hold its color for many years. The exact lifespan depends on exposure, traffic, and maintenance consistency. We discuss realistic expectations during your on-site estimate based on your specific project and location.
